License Plate

Virginia’s electric cooperatives are leading an effort to establish a state license plate honoring electric linemen, the people who keep your lights on.

To make the this plate available to the general public, at least 450 plate-holders in Virginia must commit to buying it. The design, shown here, features a lineman climbing a pole against a backdrop of rugged mountains and pines. At the bottom of the plate is the slogan, “Keeping the Lights On.”

The plate is officially titled “Honoring Powerline Workers.”  Before the license plate can be produced, there need to be 450 pre-paid applications ($25 for the plate, $35 for the plate, personalized) and approval by the state government. Delegate Terry Austin will sponsor legislation to authorize the license plate in the Virginia General Assembly.

In addition to honoring electric linemen, this project will generate funds for the Education Scholarship Fund of the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives, which is coordinating the effort. This foundation awards scholarships to students from the 15 member cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware to attend college and trade school, including the Power Line Worker Training School in partnership with Southside Community College.  Over $500,000 in scholarships has been contributed to Virginia youth through the foundation.
